hope. The popularity of these "poesy" rings (from the
Latin word for "Poetry") is shown in their frequent mention
in Shakespeare's plays. The tradition is much older than Shakespeare's
time but it was during the Renaissance that the custom reached the

original ring was probably made in Dublin in the 17th century
and is unusual for being engraved in gaelic, most poesy rings
being in French, English and Latin reflecting the popularity
of poesy rings in England and France.The
original ring is now lost or in an uncatalogued private collection,
only the beautiful sentiment survives and has been accurately
engraved on these elegantly simple designs in the gaelic spelling
of the period.
