a wedding band would be inscribed with words of love, faith and
hope. The popularity of these "poesy" rings (from
the Latin word for "Poetry") is attested to by their frequent
mention in Shakespeare's plays. The tradition is much older than
Shakespeare's time but it was during the Renaissance that the custom
reached the height of its popularity. It was common to give a sterling

"I
have wished for thee, every day, every moment." Taken from
an 1827 love letter to his wife from John J Audubon, the bird
researcher for whom the National Audubon Society of nature conservation
is named. "John J. Audubon" is signed on the back. He
was often away from his wife for long periods of doing his research.
